Kimberly Brooks
blends figuration and abstraction to address into various subject matter. Her most recent body of work, “Thread”, Brooks meditates on the language of fashion in portraiture. This series represents a natural progression in reaction to “The Stylist Project” where Brooks paints a series of portraits of renowned stylists who styled themselves and posed for the artist. “The Stylist Project” which debuted in Los Angeles in 2010, broached the red-hot themes of fashion, style and those responsible for omnisciently setting the trends. Subjects include Grace Coddington (Vogue), Janie Bryant (Mad Men) and Arianne Phillips (Madonna). Brooks earlier exhibitions focused on personal subject matter including “Mom’s Friends”, featuring paintings of her mother and her friends from the 1970s on the eve of their liberation from their marriages, and “Technicolor Summer” about contending with a close family member facing death. Brooks’ work has been featured in magazines and publications internationally. Her work has been featured in numerous juried exhibitions organized by curators including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the MOMA, LACMA. Brooks maintains her studio in Venice, California.
